Akerman LLP, whose name will be emblazoned on the top of the building at Brickell City Centre Green, is one of the country’s largest law firms, with offices in 20 cities. With 160 lawyers in one location, the firm’s Miami office is the largest of any law firm in Florida. As real estate and land use counsel to Swire Properties, Akerman LLP played a key role in the growth of Brickell City Centre.

Megan Kelly, executive vice president of Swire Properties Inc., said, “It is an honor that Akerman has chosen Brickell City Centre for its Miami office.” “Miami has evolved into a global financial and trade hub, and this very prestigious tenancy will improve Brickell City Centre’s positioning in relation to the business opportunities that Miami’s evolution is generating,” she said.

Brickell City Centre recently signed Saks Fifth Avenue as a retail anchor, and the first residential tower, Reach, is over 70% sold, demonstrating the strong demand for Class A office space in Brickell. The final office building, dubbed Two, is set to open in early 2016.

“We see Brickell City Centre as a remarkable mixed-use environment that will provide our people and clients with a truly unique experience,” said Akerman Chairman & CEO Andrew Smulian. “These new offices will allow Akerman to apply design thinking not only to where we work, but also to how we work. Our goal is to build a productive, competitive environment that fosters collisions of discovery and creativity, which are hallmarks of our law firm and client-focused community.”

Akerman LLP was represented in the transaction by Tere Blanca of Blanca Commercial Real Estate in Miami, with assistance from Alexander Cahlin and David Valdez. The Miami office will be located at 98 SE Seventh Street, on the east block of Brickell City Centre, with direct access to the Eighth Street Metromover station, which Swire Properties is currently renovating and improving. The transaction’s terms were not disclosed.

The Brickell area, dubbed “Miami’s Wall Street,” has emerged as the epicenter of international banking and industry in South Florida, and is one of the country’s largest financial districts. Brickell is one of the most connected communities in downtown Miami, thanks to the Metromover train system.
